Building resilience and sustainability in the Cardamom Mountains watershed, Cambodia

- Project Description
This project proposes to extend aspects of CI's successful work on the Tonle Sap lake, to the communities in the Cardamom Mountains watershed. With our local partner, ANKO, we will build upon existing ricefield fisheries improvement work, and recently established women's Savings Groups to develop a well rounded and holistic program. Our focus will be on improving community savings, improving environmental education; replanting lost forest; and continuing to strengethen the relationship between the fishing communities and the government. Overall we expect the project to provide lasting benefits to the target communities in the form of better capacity for NRM decision making, new forest to provide fish nursery ground in the monsoon, reduced reliance on unscrupulous money lenders, and better government-community linkages. - Recent Activities
- CI has recently conducted field work in two communities to identify opportunities and strategies for improving the knowledge of the community on environmental issues, build their ownership of natural resource management, and engage the villages in the replanting of forest that has been lost in their localities. As part of this strategy, CI conducted two 'night show' events to educate people about environment issues, pollution and wildlife hunting around their community. The Fisheries Coordination Team (FCT) at the sub-national level has also convened recently to solve many fisheries related problems in Pursat. Lastly, local schools participated in a forest replanting event attended by the Department of Environment in Pursat to celebrate World Wetland Day on February 2nd.

- With this project we hope to make the people of the Cardamom Mountains watershed more resilient to climate change, including though replanting lost forests and teaching people how to protect their resources - both natural and financial. We expect to see a reduction in external debt and new confidence and skills in self-reliance.
